Curriculum Information for the Week:
Literacy: Students have been writing their literary essays on claims and themes from the book Thank You, Mr. Falker. As book clubs wrap up this week, students will continue this process in a more independent fashion based upon their book club books and read aloud books such as Home of the Brave.

Math:  Adding and Subtracting Fractions continues this week as we move into operations with unlike denominators.  Students will develop conceptual understanding using manipulatives and models to show their thinking.  In addition to the current unit, students are doing on-going review of the topics from Unit 1 and learning from Grade 4.

Unit of Study:  Students will look into the role of citizens in a community and how they can impact society. Social Changemakers will come this week on Tuesday and Wednesday (10:30-1:00). The students will listen to all 12 speakers and hopefully will be inspired to make changes in our own community. Of course all parents are welcome to attend this conference and learn along with your children.

Curriculum Information for the Week:
Literacy: Students are continuing with book club groups using discussions to help them stretch their thinking about the book and develop themes.  We are encouraging students to think about what they are learning about real life from their books.  These ideas that are generated from their book club books will be used in their literary essays, which we will continue to learn about next week.

Math:  Adding and Subtracting Fractions continues this week as we move into operations with unlike denominators.  Students will develop conceptual understanding using manipulatives and models to show their thinking.

Unit of Study:  We will continue our reflections on Melaka as we continue our exploration of leadership and citizenship.  In preparation for our Social ChangeMakers Conference next week, students will look into the role of citizens in a community and how they can impact society.

Curriculum Information for the Week:
Literacy: Students have had a chance to complete and evaluate their writing based upon Fly Away Home.  Writing goals are being established in order to improve leads (including hooks), conclusions (with “so what” statements) and supporting paragraphs containing evidence, examples and elaboration in relation to themes and thesis statements.  Readers’ and Writers’ workshop model support each other with the book clubs being essential to the writing of the literary essay.  


Math: Unit 2 is all about fractions.  Students will begin with a tuning in and then venture onto adding fractions with like denominators.


Unit of Study: We will be in Melaka Tuesday and Wednesday.  Melaka is a strong example of governmental influence and power.  When we return classes will continue examining different forms of government, referring to the Melaka experience as our case study.

This week will be a full week! Students are able to attend ASA’s on Wednesday after our return from Melaka. If other changes are made, please make arrangements with the busing office.
Please refer to the Final Melaka Trip Parent Letter, Packing List & Itinerary to answer last minute questions.

Curriculum Information for the Week:
Literacy: The students have finished their first Book Club novels. They will begin new books shortly and continue their discussions about connections, predictions, characters, and most importantly THEMES (life lessons) using their ‘thinkmarks’. They will also continue writing journal reflections on their books. This week, the students will also complete our first writing unit pre-assessment, using the picture book, ‘Fly Away Home’.


Math: The students will continue their work on long division and move towards solving problems with double digit divisors. They will review multiplication and division of multidigit numbers using standard algorithms later this week to prepare for completing the end-of-unit summative assessment.


Unit of Study: The students will continue to learn about the different forms of government, and as our Melaka Trip is just over a week away, they will continue to learn LOTS about Melaka and the important role the port played throughout history. The students will view a trip slideshow of student expectations and a trip overview, including a packing list and itinerary.

Highlight - This Week:
5CC starts in room 222 on Tues. 5 Sept! Good luck to Clarrissa Chavez and her students as they continue their learning journey together.
Also on Tues, information will be sent home regarding a wonderful service opportunity for the Red Hats - visiting the KL Children’s Hospital on Sunday mornings from 9:30am -12:00 noon. Please look out for that!
