10/29-11/2 News Letter

LOGO FULL COLOR.pngWeekly Newsletter Grade 5

Dates:  October 29-November 2, 2018

Curriculum Information for the Week:
Literacy:
Encourage your child to discuss with you a topic that is near and dear to their heart. Tuesday the students will have 30 minutes in class to research a topic that they already know a lot about. We will then have one hour to draft our first informational writing piece!
Wednesday we will have our on demand, post-assessment for the opinion, literary essay.  This will consist of reading the text, planning and drafting....all in one day!
We will also have our post-assessment for Reading on Friday!

We hear from many parents, how do I support my child in reading anything but fantasy? Well the next reading and writing units are a supportive step in that direction. From now until the winter break students will be immersed in the world of nonfiction (but still have that independent choice reading book!). In fifth grade we ask them to tackle a more complex text and look at how the content is organized, how to decode content specific words, and how to approach a text with multiple main ideas. Since reading and writing are heavily linked, we will also be asking kids to produce this type of writing aligned with our science unit on renewable energy.  As a parent you can support by talking about articles that you are reading, current events, or interesting non-fiction books that you have read (in any language!). Who knows, maybe they will set down Percy Jackson for a few minutes...by choice!

Math:  Subtracting Fractions continues this week as we move into operations with mixed numbers and unlike denominators. Students will continue to develop their conceptual understanding by drawing and labeling rectangular fraction models to show their thinking.

Unit of Study:  The students will  finish our learning on Types of Government, and Responsible Citizenship. Thursday students will have a written assessment on government, followed by the creation of a FlipGrid as a reflection of Responsible Citizenship.
We will also start our first science unit of the year, where students study energy sources and its properties as well as sustainable alternative energy sources.  They will also be participating  in a variety of lab experiences, looking at electrical circuits, energy consumption and conservation. You can support at home by engaging with your child’s home learning.

Dear Parents,

Curriculum Information for the Week:

Digital Literacy: It takes a team to support our students as they learn to be educated, digital citizens. We are lucky to have Mr. Steve Katz as a resource for us. It is also important that you are talking with your child (in any language!) at home about the choices they are making online (this includes ISKL email). This week we reviewed with fifth graders on three important topics…
How to keep your passwords private (ONLY share with parents and teachers).
What to do if you come across inappropriate content online.
ISKL email is for school-related items. Students should not be chatting with each other through ISKL email. If you or your child needs support with other online communication options, please talk with your teacher.
Check out Common Sense Media for resources such as Here's the Secret to Raising a Safe, Smart Kid and other ways to support your 5th-grade digital citizen!

Literacy: The students have completed their book club novels and will begin focusing on or short stories. They will continue to discuss connections, predictions, characters, setting and most importantly THEMES (life lessons). You can support by making sure that your child is reading for 30 minutes a day (365 days a year!) at home on a just right book (graphic novels/comics count!).
During writing, the students will continue to work on making a claim (opinion) about a theme(s) of a short story and provide evidence from the story to support their claim. This practice will prepare the students for writing literary essays.

Math: Students will begin Unit 2, Adding and Subtracting fractions. We will begin our week reviewing vocabulary and tuning in with a variety of fraction stations. These will include equivalent fractions, comparing fractions and ordering fractions.

Dear Parents,

Curriculum Information for the Week:

Literacy: The students will continue to read and discuss their book club novels or short stories. They are using ‘thinkmarks’ to promote rich discussion about their books. They will continue to discuss connections, predictions, characters, setting and most importantly THEMES (life lessons). During writing, the students will begin to develop skills to identify topics in their reading.  These topics will then be developed into  making a claim/theme statement (opinion) of a short story and provide evidence from the story to support their claim. This practice will prepare the students for writing literary essays later in the unit.

Math: The students will continue to work on using their basic division facts, extended division facts and dividing larger numbers by multiples of 10, 100, 1000 in order  to prepare them for using the partial quotients long division algorithm and solving division problems with double digit divisors.

Unit of Study:  The students will be introduced to various forms of government: monarchy, democracy dictatorship etc. and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of these government systems. They will also work on types of government on their Home Learning Choice Board.
