11/26-11/30 News Letter

Dates: November 26-30, 2018

Curriculum Information for the Week:
Literacy: Students will continue to work on their nonfiction reading and writing units, which are integrated with our sustainable energy science unit. Students will continue to use hard copy and online texts about sustainable energy to improve their nonfiction reading and writing. This week the students will focus on choosing and researching one form of sustainable energy, including the pros and cons etc. They will begin to synthesize their research in an information essay. Later, they will use their essays to create a script for a multimedia PSA (Public Service Announcement) or a podcast, which will feature their chosen form of sustainable energy. 

Math: Students will continue to work on ‘Unit 3: The Coordinate Plane’ this week. They will continue to plot ordered pairs, read and interpret data on coordinate planes and also interpret rules involving the x and y axes. They will also continue to have fun solving various coordinate plane picture mysteries. Students will continue to review our learning from Unit 1 and Unit 2 in the daily warm ups.

Unit of Study:  The students will continue to work on our Sustainable Energy unit. Various classes have completed their electrical energy exploration labs, including building on their knowledge of circuits to create their own LED flashlights. Students will continue to read nonfiction texts to support their understanding of sustainable energy. This week, as mentioned above, the students will choose and research a form of sustainable energy.

Highlights from previous week:

  • Last Wed. afternoon, the students experienced a very interesting and informative presentation from Hector Ingram on ‘Wind Energy & Biomass (fast grass)’ in the G5 common area
  • Last Fri. we celebrated Deepavali in the ES. There were a variety of demonstrations and workshops set up in the open space on floor 2 next to the art rooms. There was also a colorful and vibrant assembly in the Melawati Theatre from 10:50-11:30am, lead by our Red Hats assembly announcers. Many thanks to Nalini Krishnan and the ES Cultural Committee for their work in planning and conducting the Deepavali program.

Curriculum Information for the Week:
Literacy: Students will be continuing their Nonfiction reading and writing unit.  This unit will be integrated with our science unit, so students will be using texts about sustainable energy to improve their nonfiction reading. This week we will understanding more complex nonfiction text and practice writing various text structures (compare/contrast, problem/solution, description, chronological order)

Math: Students will continue with coordinate planes this week. We will use important vocabulary to express ourselves and explain our thinking, focusing on one quadrant of the coordinate plane. They will be plotting ordered pairs, as well as reading and interpreting data on coordinate planes. Students will continue to review our learning from Unit 1 and Unit 2 in the daily warm ups.

Unit of Study:  We will continue to work with the Sustainable Energy unit. Classes will continue to get into the labs working with circuits and get to build their own LED flashlight. We will read nonfiction text to support our understanding of energy.

Friday, November we are celebrating Deepavali with an assembly, cultural activities and be sure to wear your Deepavali clothes!

Curriculum Information for the Week:
Literacy: Students will be continuing their Nonfiction reading and writing unit.  This unit will be integrated with our science unit, so students will be using texts about sustainable energy to improve their nonfiction reading. This week we will focus on text structures and finding the main idea.

Math: Students will be tuning in to coordinate planes this week. We will introduce important vocabulary, focusing on one quadrant of the coordinate plane. They will be plotting ordered pairs, as well as reading and interpreting data on coordinate planes. Students will continue to review our learning from Unit 1 and Unit 2 in the daily warm ups.

Unit of Study:  We will continue to work with the Sustainable Energy unit. Classes will continue to get into the labs working with circuits. The classes are all reading a non-fiction book on Energy.

 There will be a hearing check conducted by our ES Nurse Ms Bethanie this week.

Highlight - Last Week:

  • We had Mr Baker visiting to share his expertise in fossil fuels. We took part in some experiments that demonstrated locating and extracting oils found in seabed. We thank Mr Baker for his time and effort in sharing his knowledge in the field. Ask your 5th grader what they learned on Friday. 
  • Our first inaugural International Festival was on Saturday. Despite the torrential rain at the beginning of the festival, there were lots of vendors and food, activities and performances that showcased #ISKLUnited. There was awesome fireworks as the night’s finale. Thank you PTA for amazing organization!

Curriculum Information for the Week:
Literacy: Students will be starting their Nonfiction reading and writing unit.  We will focus on text structures and how these structures help support the main ideas.  Students will read from a variety of informational text, including picture books and articles.  This unit will be integrated with our science unit, this will give students the opportunity to use texts about sustainable energy to improve their nonfiction reading.

Math: Students will finish up Unit 2-Adding and Subtracting fractions.  This week classes will focus on word problems including mixed numbers, addition and subtraction. As we venture into our next unit, coordinate planes, we will continue to review our learning from Unit 1 and Unit 2 in the daily warm ups.

Unit of Study:  We will get started with our Sustainable Energy unit.  Classes started with tuning in activities, which sparked curiosity.  This week classes will have their first science lab exploration, focusing on circuits.
