LOGO FULL COLOR.pngWeekly Newsletter Grade 5

Dates: April 23-27

Dear Parents,

Curriculum Information for this Week:

Literacy: Students continue to learn about Social Issues and Human Rights.  They are choosing a social issue and a notable to focus on for research. They will reinforce and build on their note-taking skills as well as learn more about trustworthy resources and identifying perspective.  As they research, they will be writing down their ideas to help them solidify their thinking around the topic.

Math: We will continue our Volume and Measurement Unit.  Students will explore volume by building and counting unit cubes. We will compose and decompose rectangular prisms, as well as take a look at how to calculate the volume of shapes consisting of more than just one rectangular prism.

Unit of Study: We will continue our Social Change unit by preparing for ‘Night of the Notables’ 2018 presentation.  The scripts have been edited and rewritten, staging continues to take place, and we will begin practicing in the studio. Students will dig deeper into the Change Maker or Social Issue that they are exploring for their blackboard presentations. The Night of the Notables presentations will be on the evening of Tuesday 8 May.  Please refer to  the letter that was sent  home with the details of this event.

They are all in the process of choosing a “notable” person to research. Have some discussions at home about people that you know throughout history who have seen a need and chosen to make a positive difference.

For more information and ways to support your child please visit the Parent Learning Connection page.

Important Reminders/Information: (also see GLC Updates)
This Friday students will have Night of the Notables photos taken. Please ensure black trousers are sent to school before Friday, April 27
We have a long weekend coming up. School will resume May 2 (Day 2)
Please be reviewing your child’s lines for the ‘Night of the Notables’ show. They should be LOUD and CLEAR. Take videos of your child to allow them to hear exactly what they sound like. It’s helpful.

Reading MAP Test on Monday

Highlight from last week:
Earth Week activities were a huge success! Thank you for reaching out, whether in your household or the community, to make even a small difference.

Thank you for sending in Toys for the toy drive. Boxes are overflowing! The toys will be donated to the Refugee Center this week. We will take lots of pictures. Special thanks to the 5th graders who initiated this project: Kumail and Evie.
